Ayurvedic Nutrition Nothing is forbidden

Ayurvedic Nutrition

Ayurveda literally translated: The knowledge of the life.

The nutrition plays a very important role in the Ayurveda. Nothing is forbidden, a food which is balanced and corresponding to the constitution type is simply recommended. In the ayurvedic meaning means: to take account on all six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, sharp, bitter and herb.

Food examples for the different tastes (Rasas):
Sweet: rice, corn, carrots
Sour: vinegars, citrus fruits
Salty: all salt types
Sharp: peppers, curry, paprika, onions
Bitter: green leafy vegetables
Herb: cabbage, aubergines, rhubarb

These tastes (Rasas) have a different effect on the respective constitution types (Doshas). So reduces for example "sweet" the Dosha Vata and Pitta, increases however the Dosha Kapha.

General effect of the different Rasas:
Sweet: vitalises
Sour: promotes the sensory perception
Salty: activates the digestion; stabilizes feeling fluctuations
Sharp: digestion promotional
Bitter: regulates digestion problems
Herb: harmonizes digestion fire

Now one can see what a one-sided nutrition can cause. As long as there is no disturbance of a Dosha therefore it is quite important to apply the six Rasas in the balance. At a Dosha disturbance such as a typical Pitta disturbance "heartburn" one should avoid food which still increases Pitta. If one takes all tastes daily, no desires arise, one feels replete and content instead.

The metabolism:
A well operating metabolism is extremely important in the Ayurveda. Undigested food leads to metabolism poisons which load the body very much and lead in the long run to illnesses. One calls these metabolism poisons "Ama".

The ideal health cure at too many metabolism poisons (Ama):
It is the Panchakarma health cure. This is a cleaning and rejuvenation cure. A combination out of inner and outer oil treatments (e.g. enemas and massages), ayurvedic kitchen, yoga and meditation. This health cure normally lasts for min. 10 days.

In the Ayurveda it is called to think integral. So the healthiest nutrition does not help if one eats with hated people or if lack of time characterizes the life or worries and like that push on the stomach. Not only the aliments itself are decisive but also the age, the surroundings, the lifestyle and the year as day times. The ayurvedic kitchen is independent of the Indian cooking, it can as well be converted in the German cooking. So many do not have to change you at all. It are the famous small things-primarily the spices, which makes your meals more balanced and you help to feel healthy and well.

The German asparagus season starts with middle of April and ends on June 24th. Because of the warmer climate you reap in France, Italy and Spain longer.

- May I heat cooked asparagus up
  again?
- Asparagus also shall drain the body.
  Is this correct?
- Where does the strange smell of the
  urine come from ...?
